So im not sure what the problem is since I can open applications via the long route - I've tried rebooting and starting in "Safe Mode" but same problem. I could use the task manager to start system restore but only got an empty window so could not return my registry to good condition. I'd say if yours has got to that stage then you might want to think about reinstalling windows which is what I did. Since I did that, I also set my Windows 7, 64 bit screensaver to wake up on the login screen. I have a Radeon 1300 video driver if it relates to this problem. Either Windows 7 has a bug or one of the later updates in November created the problem.
