so then i go back to command prompt and type C:\WINDOWS\inf and it returns the message "C:/windows/inf is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" David. The last few lines in my setupapi.log included mshdc.inf I deleted this file as per instructions and tired to continue the setup. So I would suggest to take the backup of your data on some other machine from your hard drive and do a fresh installation on your new system configuration. I don't use Ubuntu much, so I'm not as familiar with that distribution, and not-at-all as a Live CD.
